How Our Work-from-Home Journey Began

Our work-from-home journey started nearly three years before remote work became widely accepted. At the time, we were building a Pan-India service network to provide faster support to customers across different regions.

One of our biggest challenges was communication. We had several customers and service partners in Southern India, and language barriers often made conversations difficult. Sometimes we struggled to understand local accents, while our customers found it difficult to fully understand us. This is a common challenge for businesses serving customers across different parts of India.

To solve this problem, we first considered hiring multilingual employees in Mumbai. However, we soon realized that hiring local professionals in the regions where our customers were located would provide a much better experience. The next question was simple: where would they work from? The answer was equally simple: their homes.

Building a Secure Remote Work System

Once we decided to hire local employees who could work remotely, we needed to address several important concerns, including trust, data security, and business processes.

After several rounds of trial and improvement, we successfully built a secure digital platform that allowed remote teams to access work orders, customer information, and business processes from anywhere.  This system eventually evolved into AntMyERP, which later became our flagship Field Service Management Software for managing field operations, remote teams, customer requests, and business workflows.

Our first remote hires were based in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Lucknow. Like any new process, there were a few initial challenges, but they were resolved quickly. Soon, these local employees were able to support customers more effectively by communicating in their preferred language and understanding regional requirements.

This experience became the foundation of our long-term remote work model.

Creating Opportunities Beyond Metro Cities

Encouraged by the success of our remote service engineers, we expanded the model further by hiring a Happy Caller from a small town to manage service call quality.

The initiative proved successful while also creating employment opportunities outside major cities. It reinforced our belief that talent is not limited by location when supported by the right technology and processes.

An Unexpected Event Strengthened Our Remote Culture

At the beginning of 2019, an unexpected office fire forced our entire team to work from home until operations returned to normal.

Although it was an unplanned situation, we were determined to ensure that our customers experienced no disruption.Every team member continued serving clients as if it were business as usual because customer requests and complaints were managed through a centralized system.

For more than two months, the entire organization operated remotely.

When the office became available again, we evaluated our experience and realized something remarkable: we had maintained business continuity, supported customers successfully, and continued growing without needing a physical office every day.

That realization changed our strategy permanently.

A Better Balance Between Work and Life

Today, our employees spend more time with their families while continuing to deliver excellent customer service. Instead of daily office interactions, we meet occasionally at coffee shops and team gatherings to maintain personal connections.

Many employees whose families lived outside Mumbai were encouraged to relocate to their hometowns and continue working remotely. Several team members embraced this opportunity, resulting in happier employees and improved work-life balance without affecting business performance.

What Changed?

After more than a year of successfully operating as a remote organization, we identified several benefits for both employees and employers.

According to the Indian Service Dealers Association (ISODA), digital transformation and technology adoption continue to reshape the office equipment and managed service industry, making efficient service operations and remote collaboration increasingly important.
